In Memory of my Mamaw

This is something I composed this week about my mamaw and read during her funeral.

         ABC's of Sandy Marksberry's Life

I really don't like funerals - not just the idea of death, but the idea that sometimes we only know a season of the person's life. As I was praying this week, I felt like I need to express who my mamaw was throughout her life. I began writing and developed the ABC's of mamaw. At first I was hesistant because of the humor behind some of the letters, but the Lord brought me to some scriptures in Ecclesiates 3: 1, 2 &4

1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity
           under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance

So now is a time to laugh :-)

A - Alice Stevenson - her grandmother who was more like a mother, she raised from the time she was 6 months old

B - Big Boys at Frisch with her best friend Brenda

C - Cigarette she always had either in her hand or the pack in her bra strap

D - Daughters - Debbie and Kim

E - Elvis, mamaw's top idol and anyone around her the time of his death knows how she reacted

F - Frankfort, the place where she was born and raised

G - German numbers 1 thru 10 she would count while being put under for surgeries, even backwards

H - Hula hoops - she would out hula-hoop anyone

I - Interested.....in everyone else's business and always knew what was going on

J - Jokes that we all pulled on her just to get the evil glare and snare

K - Kitchen - the many, many hours she spent cooking, canning and baking goodies

L - License she didn't receive until she was 44 years old, and still couldn't drive :-)

M - Modesty - well.....lack of it, since she didn't have any :-)

N - Nails that she always grew long

O - Obsessed with her favorite TV shows throughout the years and would throw a fit if she missed one

P - Peppermints and Pepsi she always had to have a stock in

Q - Quantity of official and unofficial relatives - 3 brothers and 9 sisters - along with many "adopted children"

R - Red - ruby red lipstick; ruby red nail polish; and Red Lobster crab legs and cheddar bay biscuits

S - Stitches - sewing stitches, knitting stitches, plastic canvas stitches, and surgical stitches

T - Teeth - her false teeth - she took them out anywhere to clean them - even while making funeral arrangments we were still passing them around :-)

U - Unique, unexpected and unimaginable sense of humor

V - Vacations she enjoyed during her life with friends & family

W - Wool Fest and Wal-"marks", a couple of her favorite places

X - Xtraordinary number of dance moves she knew - the Charleston, the Twist, the Stroll, the Jitterbug, clogging, the Cha-Cha, the mashed potato and the chicken dance just to name a few

Y - Yelling during demolition derbies, firework shows, movies, TV shows and especially while playing cards - even more when she lost :-)

Z - Zillion yard sales she went to, because there was always just "one more"

I hope each of you have learned something new about my mamaw through this.
